Q. What are the GRE exams?

Students who want to join a graduate school in America must pass through the GRE examinations. The GRE examination, abbreviated from Graduate Record Examination, is a standardized test which is required for admissions in most of the Graduate schools in the United States. The GRE examination was created by the Educational testing Service, otherwise known as the ETS, to see which students have the ability to join the school.

The GRE examination is a computer based examination, unlike the traditional method of writing on paper with a pen or pencil as it used to be. This method may be due to the advancement of a world where technology has taken over. The GRE examination is 176 minutes long and has six sections which aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking abilities. In MCQs, if one were to miss a question or two, they may still be able to score a perfect 170 score, or may get a lowest 130 score.

The idea of having a computer based examination certainly sounds appealing to many, especially since many examinations and competitions, such as the annual online essay writing competition held by the HRCA, is performed on a computer. However, many critics voiced out some of their complaints concerning the methods of the GRE examination. The most significant one may perhaps be of cheating. Because the examination must be completed on a computer, candidates have access to the internet where they can peek at and copy answers. Because of this, the GRE test loses its initial goal as an exam which is to see how much students remember and how they use their heads in analytical questions.

Though the GRE examination has some downsides, it is still an important examination that assesses a student to see if they are fit for the specific graduate school and to see if they have what it takes to get through it.
